Photo-eye sensors and how we check them
Near the floor on each side of the door sit two small photo-eye sensors. They send an invisible beam across the opening. If anything breaks that beam while the door is closing — a child, a pet, a bike — the door stops and goes back up.
- Alignment. The two eyes must point straight at each other.
- Clean lenses. Dust, cobwebs, or a bumped bracket can blind them.
- Solid wiring. A loose or pinched wire makes the sensors cut out.
- The wave test. We break the beam by hand while the door closes to confirm it reverses.
Spring, cable, and hardware check
Safety is not only about the opener. The springs and cables carry the door's weight, and a failure there can drop the door fast. We look for gaps in the spring coil, fraying on the lift cables, and worn or loose brackets. On older doors with extension springs, we check for the safety cables that keep a snapped spring from flying loose.
