Your garage door is the largest moving part of your home, and it runs thousands of times a year. A little upkeep keeps it quiet, safe, and reliable — and prevents the surprise breakdowns that always seem to hit on the coldest morning. Here is a simple checklist you can run a few times a year. When something needs a pro, Tek Garage Door Repair is at (833) 341-0175.
Look and listen first
Stand inside and watch the door go up and down a couple of times.
- Does it move smoothly, or jerk and hesitate?
- Is it noisy — grinding, squealing, or banging?
- Do both sides rise evenly, or does it look crooked?
Odd sounds and uneven motion are early warnings. Our guide on why doors get loud helps you read the noise.
Tighten the hardware
All that movement loosens things over time. With the door closed, check the brackets, hinges, and bolts along the track and hand-tighten any that have worked loose. Do not touch the bottom bracket — it is under cable tension.
Lubricate the moving parts
Dry rollers, hinges, and springs are the top cause of a noisy door. Use a proper garage-door lube two or three times a year — more in a cold Western MA winter. See how to lubricate a garage door for the how-to.
Test the balance
Pull the release cord and lift the door halfway by hand. A healthy door stays put. If it drops or shoots up, the springs are out of balance — a job for a tech, not a DIY fix. Never adjust torsion springs or cables yourself.
Test the safety features
- Auto-reverse: lay a block of wood under the door and close it. It should touch the wood and roll back up.
- Sensors: wave an object through the beam as the door closes. It should stop and reverse.
If either fails, call us. Our tune-up service covers these checks in full.
Check the weather seal
Look at the rubber strip along the bottom. If it is cracked or you see daylight under a closed door, it is time for a new one — see weather seal replacement.
When to bring in a pro
A yearly professional tune-up catches the things a homeowner cannot safely check — spring tension, cable wear, and opener force settings. It is the cheapest insurance against a mid-winter breakdown.
