Tek Garage Door Repair

Few things are more frustrating than a garage door that will not close. It leaves your home wide open. Your car, tools, and belongings are exposed. And if it happens at night or during bad weather, it can feel like an emergency.

Before you panic, know that most garage door closing problems have simple causes. Here are eight common reasons your garage door will not close and what you can do to fix them.

Blocked or Misaligned Safety Sensors

Every modern garage door has two small sensors near the bottom of the tracks. These are called photo-eye sensors. They shoot an invisible infrared beam across the opening. If anything blocks this beam, the door will not close. It is a safety feature to keep people and pets from getting trapped under the door.

Check if something is blocking the sensors, like a broom, box, or pile of leaves. Also, look at the small LED lights on each sensor. If one is blinking, the sensors are out of alignment. Gently adjust them until both lights glow steadily.

Dirty Sensor Lenses

Even if your sensors are aligned, dirty lenses can cause problems. Dust, cobwebs, and grime build up over time. This blocks the infrared beam just enough to stop the door from closing. Wipe both sensor lenses with a clean, soft cloth. This quick fix solves the problem more often than you might think.

Broken Springs

Your garage door springs do the heavy lifting. They hold the weight of the door and control its movement. When a spring breaks, the door becomes too heavy for the opener to close. You might hear a loud bang when a spring snaps. If this happens, do not try to close the door manually. Call for spring replacement service right away. Broken springs are dangerous and need a trained professional.

Snapped or Frayed Cables

Garage door cables work together with the springs. If a cable snaps or frays, the door can hang crooked or refuse to close at all. You might see the cable hanging loose on one side. This is another repair that should only be done by a professional. Our cable repair specialists can replace damaged cables quickly and safely.

Close Limit Switch Needs Adjusting

Your garage door opener has a close limit switch. This tells the motor how far the door should travel before stopping. If this switch is set wrong, the door might reverse before it reaches the ground. It thinks it has hit something when it has not. The limit switch is usually a small screw on the back or side of the opener unit. Turn it slightly to increase the travel distance. Check your owner’s manual for the exact steps.

Force Settings Are Too Low

Garage door openers also have force settings that control how much power the motor uses. If the downward force is set too low, the door may stop or reverse when it meets even slight resistance. You can adjust the force dial on most openers. Increase it a little at a time until the door closes fully without reversing.

Track Problems

Bent, rusty, or dirty tracks can stop your door from closing. The door rollers travel along these tracks, and any obstruction or damage causes the door to stick. Look along the full length of both tracks for dents, debris, or rust buildup. Clean the tracks with a damp cloth and check for any visible bends.

Opener Motor or Circuit Board Failure

If none of the above fixes work, the problem might be with the opener itself. The motor could be burned out, or the circuit board might have failed. Older openers are especially prone to this after 10–15 years of use. Our team handles all types of garage door opener repair and can diagnose the issue fast.
